What is SCENAR therapy?

SCENAR is short for Self-controlling Energy Neuro Adaptive Regulator – a small machine first developed by the Russians for use by the cosmonauts so they would have a means of treating themselves without the need for drugs when in space.

A SCENAR machine is a short pulse electronic neuro-adaptive therapeutic stimulator - which makes it sound very complicated. In essence, it is easier to think of a SCENAR machine as a small but very effective and compact device offering electrotherapy.

How does SCENAR work?

The aim of a SCENAR treatment is to stimulate the body’s own healing powers by emitting an electromagnetic signal which is almost identical to the human nerve signal. This signal travels along special types of nerve fibres to the brain, which results in the production of neuropeptides which rapidly advance healing. When applied to the point of pain, the brain also releases endorphins, the body’s own powerful pain relieving substances.

SCENAR treatment is an entirely non-invasive biofeedback device which does not involve either drugs or surgery. It is operated by placing the device directly on the skin, where it collects electromagnetic signals that are modified and sent back to the body. This biofeedback is what distinguishes it from TENS machines and other electrical therapies.

What does it feel like?

When the machine is placed on the skin, it is adjusted until a gentle, tingling sensation is felt.

Is it the same as a TENS machine?

No. A SCENAR machine is in continuous two way feedback with the body, assessing what the body needs and sending back different impulses to the body to meet those needs. A TENS machine does not do this.

Is SCENAR safe?

SCENAR is licensed for use in the EU for pain relief; it is licensed by the British Standards Institute and carries a CE mark for pain relief.

As a SCENAR impulse is similar to the body’s own nerve impulses, it is non-damaging and safe. However, it is recommended that people with cardiac pacemakers or those suffering from epilepsy do not have this treatment, also pregnant women. It is however, safe to use on children and the elderly.

SCENAR has no known side effects.

What does a treatment involve?

You will be asked about your health (past and present) and then the SCENAR will be placed on the skin – over the spine, abdomen or affected area – and a gentle tingling sensation will be felt. As the healing begins, the skin may redden or change colour in relation to the surrounding area and/or the sound of the machine may change as it passes over the point of pain. This is the start of the healing process and the initial treatment may take up to one hour. Once the area begins to change (e.g. the skin becomes less ‘sticky’, or it changes colour, or the tone of the machine changes) the SCENAR treatment is complete. Afterwards, you may feel an increase in energy, you may sleep better and generally feel more refreshed.

Why should I try a Scenar treatment?

SCENAR treatments can be enjoyed alongside other therapies and medical treatment, so if you have not been able to resolve your problem, then it is worth giving SCENAR a try. It is non-invasive and gentle, and there are no known side effects.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the complaint, but acute problems usually need fewer treatments – for example acute back pain may only need 3-4 sessions. What we are looking for however, is incremental change – if you have had a problem for a long time, then it is not going to be resolved in just one session!

  Scenar Migraine Therapy

Are there any side effects/contra-indications?

There are no known side effects. However although this is a very safe treatment, it is recommended that patients with cardiac pacemakers, those suffering from epilepsy or those who are pregnant do not have this treatment.

What can I expect once I have finished my treatment?

SCENAR continues to work even after you have completed your course of treatment so don’t be concerned if you are discharged before you are completely better. Most people continue to improve for approximately three months after treatment and some continue to improve for up to five months. It is also common to experience flare ups of old symptoms and pain during this period as the body continues to heal and this is completely normal.

What else do I need to know?

For best results it is recommended that you do not bathe or shower for two hours before or after treatment, or to engage in demanding or stressful activities during that period. Also, it may be necessary to shave an area of skin to ensure good communication between the device and body.

And finally…Please remember!!!!!!

  Scenar Shoulder Pain Therapy

Your body takes time to heal! Your symptoms didn’t just suddenly appear; just as they took time to develop and establish themselves, recovery takes time and patience too!

By focussing on the positive effects of the treatment as long as your symptoms are changing (this means they may feel better OR worse) then the treatment is working.
